Is dog poop good fertilizer?
No, dog poop is not good fertilizer. It is acidic and nitrogen-heavy, so it burns grass instead of feeding it. Manure works as fertiliser because cattle and horses are herbivores, and a dog is not.
The manure confusion
Almost everyone who asks this is thinking of cow or horse manure, which genuinely is used as fertiliser. Those animals eat grass, so their waste is broken-down plant matter. A dog eats meat, and the output is chemically a different thing.
What it does to a lawn
It scorches. The usual pattern is a dark green ring around a yellow centre that goes bare. The ring is the diluted edge behaving like fertiliser, and the centre is the burn. Once it is bare the patch usually needs reseeding.
And composting it
A normal garden compost heap does not get hot enough for long enough to kill the pathogens in dog waste. Whatever comes out the other end should never go near a vegetable bed.
